Decorrelation and Shallow Semantic Patterns for Distributional Clustering of Nouns and Verbs

چکیده

Distributional approximations to lexical semantics are very useful not only in helping the creation of lexical semantic resources (Kilgariff et al., 2004; Snow et al., 2006), but also when directly applied in tasks that can benefit from large-coverage semantic knowledge such as coreference resolution (Poesio et al., 1998; Gasperin and Vieira, 2004; Versley, 2007), word sense disambiguation (McCarthy et al., 2004) or semantical role labeling (Gordon and Swanson, 2007). We present a model that is built from Webbased corpora using both shallow patterns for grammatical and semantic relations and a window-based approach, using singular value decomposition to decorrelate the feature space which is otherwise too heavily influenced by the skewed topic distribution of Web corpora.

Developing a Semantic Similarity Judgment Test for Persian Action Verbs and Non-action Nouns in Patients With Brain Injury and Determining its Content Validity

Objective: Brain trauma evidences suggest that the two grammatical categories of noun and verb are processed in different regions of the brain due to differences in the complexity of grammatical and semantic information processing. Studies have shown that the verbs belonging to different semantic categories lead to neural activity in different areas of the brain, and action verb processing is r...

Semantic Clustering of Adjectives and Verbs Based on Syntactic Patterns

In this paper we show that some of the syntactic patterns in an NLP lexicon can be used to identify semantically ”similar” adjectives and verbs. We define semantic similarity on the basis of parameters used in the literature to classify adjectives and verbs semantically. The semantic clusters obtained from the syntactic encodings in the lexicon are evaluated by comparing them with semantic grou...

Probabilistic Modeling of Joint-context in Distributional Similarity

Most traditional distributional similarity models fail to capture syntagmatic patterns that group together multiple word features within the same joint context. In this work we introduce a novel generic distributional similarity scheme under which the power of probabilistic models can be leveraged to effectively model joint contexts. Based on this scheme, we implement a concrete model which uti...

Semantic Clustering of Adjectives and Verbs Using their Syntactic Patterns

The idea that the syntactic behaviour of words is connected with their meaning has been the assumption behind research in elds such as lexical semantics and automatic clustering of words based on statistical methods. In particular much work has been done to describe the relation between the semantic characteristics of verbs and their syntactic patterns, among many Fillmore (1970) and Levin (199...

Verb Confrontation Naming and Word-Picture Matching in Alzheimer's Disease

Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) were asked to name pictures and perform a multiplechoice word-picture matching task with verbs and nouns. AD patients were significantly more impaired with verbs than nouns for both naming and word-picture matching, and their patterns of semantic naming errors differed for verbs and nouns. One subgroup of AD patients was compromised on both naming and word...
